Empieza un alto al fuego entre Israel-Hezbolá tras un año de conflicto

By Jordi Bou

November 26, 2024 - Un alto al fuego entre Israel y Hezbolá ha entrado en vigor luego de que ambas partes aceptaron un acuerdo intermediado por EUA y Francia.

The agreement is based on the terms of UN Security Council resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah, but was never fully implemented.

The deal promises to end a conflict across the Israeli-Lebanese border that has killed thousands of people since it was ignited by the Gaza war last year.

Under the terms of the ceasefire, over 60 days Hezbollah will remove its fighters and weapons from the area between the Blue Line – the unofficial border between Lebanon and Israel – and the Litani river, around 30km to the north.

Hezbollah fighters will be replaced by Lebanese army forces in that area, who will ensure that infrastructure or weaponry is removed and that it cannot be rebuilt, according to a senior US official.

Over the same 60 days, the Israeli military would withdraw from southern Lebanon.

A pre-existing tripartite monitoring mechanism between the UN peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon (UNIFIL), the Lebanese army and the Israeli army would be expanded to include the U.S. and France, with the U.S. chairing the group.
