U.S. federal spending rises despite Musk’s DOGE cuts

By Ninian Carter

March 13, 2025 - Elon Musk, who heads up the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has failed to stop U.S. federal spending hitting a new record high for the month of February.

Elon Musk’s cuts have failed to stop U.S. federal spending hitting a new record high for the month of February, with outlay spending rising to $603.4 billion – up 6% on the same period last year.

Musk, who heads up the Trump administration’s so called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), claims to have already made more than $100bn of savings in little over a month – although this figure is disputed.

It’s believed an estimated 220,000 federal jobs have been axed by DOGE so far this year, with more expected as agencies feel compelled to initiate budget reductions.
