British government facing 2024 election “extinction”

By Ninian Carter

January 15, 2024 - A poll of 14,000 UK residents forecasts the largest collapse in support for a governing party since 1906, with the Conservatives heading for an election wipeout.

The UK ruling Conservative Party is facing a wipeout at the upcoming general election, according to an opinion poll of 14,000 residents commissioned by The Daily Telegraph newspaper – the survey pool is around seven times larger than that of a typical poll.

The YouGov survey forecasts the Labour Party will sweep to power with 385 seats (a 120-seat majority and an 11.5% swing) – the biggest collapse in support for a governing party since 1906.

Such is the scale of the forecast defeat, that every historically Labour-supporting seat won by the Tories, under the leadership of Boris Johnson in 2019, will be lost, with 11 Cabinet ministers also losing their seats.

Writing in The Daily Telegraph, Conservative peer Lord Frost described the poll’s results as “an extinction event”.
