UK ELECTION 2024
In the run-up to the UK general election on July 4, Bloomberg has found that Britain’s housing crisis is the worst since World War II – requiring the next government to build another city the size of London if it wants to make up for 50 years of decline.
UK developers and local authorities have failed to deliver homes at the pace of wealthy European neighbours, with some parts of the UK only having one available house for every 10 people.
Ahead of the election, in which property has become a key issue, both Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and the opposition leader Keir Starmer pledge to build new homes at a pace not seen since the 1970s – but even if they did that, it would require 14 years, and the construction of 4.3 million new homes, to clear the backlog.
