A former human rights lawyer turned state prosecutor, Starmer, 61, is the current favourite to win the country’s July 4 election.

Starmer will become the first Labour prime minister since 2010 if Labour wins the election.

He was knighted in 2014 for his role leading the Crown Prosecution Service and replaced Corbyn as Labour leader in 2020, following his election defeats in 2017 and 2019.

“The party is completely unrecognisable compared to how it was a few years ago,” Rachel Reeves, the shadow chancellor, told the Financial Times.

Starmer’s firm control over Labour is evident in the party’s stringent candidate selection process. Last July, the left-wing mayor for North of Tyne, Jamie Driscoll, was barred from re-election after a public appearance with Ken Loach, the film director expelled from Labour in 2021.

Driscoll’s case has drawn backing from other Labour mayors, Andy Burnham and Steve Rotheram, who questioned whether the decision was “democratic, transparent and fair.”

Some have likened this election to 1997, when Tony Blair led Labour to a landslide victory of 418 of 650 seats after 18 years of Conservative rule.
