Chaos breitet sich auf US Universitätsgeländen aus
May 1, 2024 -
Heftige Zusammenstöße zwischen Polizei und pro-Palästinensischen Anhängern auf einer wachsenden Zahl von US Universitäten, führt bisher zu über 1.400 Verhaftungen unter den Protestierenden.
The weeks of demonstrations -- the most sweeping and prolonged unrest to rock U.S. college campuses since the Vietnam War protests of the 1960s and 1970s -- have already led to several hundred arrests (1,428 arrests as of May 1) of students and other activists.
Pro-Palestinian protestors at Columbia University’s campus in the heart of New York City occupied Hamilton Hall as they protested the soaring death toll from Israel’s war with Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
President Joe Biden’s White House had sharply criticized the seizure of Hamilton Hall, with a spokesman saying it was “absolutely the wrong approach.”
The action came as university administrators around the U.S. have struggled for weeks to contain pro-Palestinian demonstrations on dozens of campuses. The primary focus is that universities divest from companies with financial ties to Israel amid its war with Hamas.
Police have arrested protesters on 29 campuses in at least 24 states.
