The Apostle Peter is venerated as the first Pope and the Basilica was built over the spot where he was crucified by the Roman Emperor Nero in the first century AD. In the 1940s, archaeological excavations under the Papal altar uncovered a sealed niche containing bones which were later identified as those of a sturdy 1st-century male in his mid-60s, wrapped in fabric dating from 4th century, possibly the bones of the Apostle.
Pope Francis will be buried in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore on the other side of the Tiber River in Rome. The last pope to break with tradition in this way was Leo XIII in 1903, who was buried in the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano.
