América Latina enfrenta la política de deportaciones de EUA

By Phil Bainbridge

January 27, 2025 - Líderes de América Latina han mostrado indignación por los vuelos de deportación de EUA de inmigrantes ilegales, muchos de ellos encadenados, así como por las amenazas de aranceles y sanciones contra los aliados de EUA en la región.

Colombian President Gustavo Patro had turned back U.S. military planes carrying illegal immigrants, in response to what was described as their “inhumane treatment” and demanded they be treated with “dignity and respect”. Colombia was still open to receiving deportees on non-military flights, as it has done before the Trump administration came to power. Brazil’s foreign ministry also complained of degrading treatment of its citizens after 88 arrived in the country in handcuffs.

In response, President Trump threatened to immediately impose a damaging 25% tariff on all Colombian imports, rising to 50% after a week, with financial sanctions and a travel ban on government officials. Critics have pointed out that Colombia is historically one of the United States’ longest standing strategic allies in the region.

The unauthorised immigrant population in the U.S. grew to 11 million in 2022, reversing a downward trend from 2007-2019, but below the peak of 12.2 million reached in 2007.
