Trump issued a sweeping grant of clemency to all of the nearly 1,600 people charged in connection with the attack on Congress, issuing pardons to most of the defendants and commuting the sentences of 14 members of the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers militia, most of whom were convicted of seditious conspiracy.
Among those whose sentences were commuted was Enrique Tarrio, the former leader of the Proud Boys, who was serving a 22-year prison term after being convicted at trial of seditious conspiracy, and Stewart Rhodes, the founder of the far-right Oath Keepers militia.
The pardons are a culmination of Trump’s campaign to rewrite the history of the Jan 6 attack, which left more than 100 police officers injured as the angry mob of Trump supporters.
While pardons were expected, the speed and the scope of the clemency amounted to a stunning dismantling of the Justice Department’s effort to hold participants accountable over what has been described as one of the darkest days in the country’s history.
