Cockpit temperatures at the 2023 Qatar GP reached a sweltering 50˚C causing many drivers to suffer from intense dehydration and overheating. The 2024 race was moved to December to avoid a recurrence but with high temperatures remaining a frequent occurrence at a number of tracks throughout the season, the FIA have acted to introduce regulations for driver cooling systems, including an additional weight allowance for compressor and heat exchangers.
Other rule changes for 2025 include a removal of the bonus point for fastest lap in a GP, changes to the Testing of Previous Car regulations, allowing race drivers only 4 days TPC running out of a team total of 20 days, and a requirement to field a rookie driver in free practice at least twice per season. Restrictions to the Drag Reduction System have been introduced, limiting rear wing deflection and the rear wing gap slot, to prevent the “mini-DRS” concepts seen in 2024.
