October 8, 2023: Kelvin Kiptum shattered the men’s world record at the Chicago Marathon, in a time of 2:00:35. Kiptum died in a car crash in Kenya earlier this year, aged 24

October 9, 1759: The Eddystone Lighthouse, off England’s southwest coast, was completed. Modelled on the shape of an oak tree, it had a major influence on lighthouse design

October 10, 2014: Pakistani schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai, shot by the Taliban for demanding education for girls, became the youngest ever recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize

October 11, 1957: Britain’s Jodrell Bank radio telescope, then the largest in the world, went into operation, just in time to track Sputnik 1, the world’s first artificial satellite

October 12, 1928: The first use of an “iron lung” took place to treat a young patient suffering from polio. The medical ventilator enabled polio sufferers to breathe more normally
