Contendientes por convertirse en el próximo primer ministro de Japón

August 14, 2024 - La decisión de Fumio Kishida de no postularse para un segundo período como líder del Partido Liberal Democrático (PLD), que ha gobernado durante mucho tiempo, abre el camino para una carrera para sucederlo como primer ministro.

Support for Kishida, who has been PM since 2021, has fallen in the wake of a corruption scandal involving his party, rising living costs and a slumping yen.

Under Japan's parliamentary system, the leader of the ruling party, or coalition of parties, becomes prime minister. For almost all of Japan's post-World War II history, that has meant the premier has hailed from Kishida's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).

The LDP must hold a leadership race every three years. The next one is due to be held in September although the dates have yet to be set.
