A string of 13 months of new global heat records has come to an end after July 2024 posted the second-warmest average temperature.
Although July this year was technically not quite as warm as July 2023 on average, the Earth did experienced its hottest day on record – Jul 22, 2024: 17.16°C.
Scientists for the European climate agency Copernicus, believe the slight average fall of just 0.04°C, is due to the ebbing of the natural El Niño climate pattern.
However, they added that the end of the record-breaking streak changes nothing about the threat posed by climate change – with the trend most definitely still moving upwards.
