Modi gana la elección en India pero sufre un revés

By Jordi Bou

June 5, 2024 - El primer ministro indio Narendra Modi retendrá el poder como jefe de
una coalición gobernante pero su partido nacionalista hindú perdió su mayoría absoluta por primera vez en una década.

Official results from India’s Election Commission showed the NDA won 286 seats, more than the 272 seats needed to secure a majority but far fewer than had been expected.

That means Modi will need the support of other parties in his coalition — a stunning blow for the 73-year-old, who had hoped for a landslide victory.

Two allies in Modi’s National Democratic Alliance coalition, the Telugu Desam Party, a key regional player in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh, and the Janata Dal (United), which rules the northern state of Bihar, have already pledged their support.

More than 640 million votes were cast in the marathon election held over a span of six weeks in the world’s largest democratic exercise.
