Tres muertos en el primer ataque fatal hutí a la navegación en el Mar Rojo

By Jordi Bou

March 7, 2024 - La campaña de ataques de los hutíes de Yemen contra barcos mercantes ha cobrado sus primeras víctimas mortales con un ataque a un barco de carga en el Golfo de Adén que mató a tres marineros y dejó cuatro lesionados.

The Barbados-flagged True Confidence was hit at about 11:30 local time (08:30 GMT) on Mar 6, killing one Vietnamese and two Filipino seafarers.

A picture posted by U.S. Central Command (Centcom) of the vessel shows that the missile had inflicted severe damage to the accommodation block housing crew cabins.

The ship has now been abandoned and is drifting with a fire on board.

The attack seems likely to have been a result of the ship’s previous ownership by Oaktree, one of the U.S. private equity firms that is most active in shipping investment.

The Houthis started a campaign of attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden in November, following the outbreak of the war between Israel and Hamas.

Since then, the Iran-backed group has attacked more than 40 ships.

The most serious previous assault, on February 19, led to the sinking of the UK-owned
bulk carrier Rubymar.
