By Phil Bainbridge

Hamas is calling for a permanent ceasefire and complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza but in the meantime wants the release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners in exchange for the hostages. Egyptian and Qatari mediators are making intense efforts to secure an agreement before the holy month of Ramadan begins on March 10. Israel has said that if there is no deal by then, it will begin an offensive on Rafah City, the last bastion of Hamas but also now home to around 1.4 million people.

War cabinet member and former-IDF chief-of-staff Benny Gantz will meet U.S. VP Kamala Harris at White House without the approval of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as the White House seemingly attempts to cultivate links with centrists in the Israeli government. Gantz heads the opposition National Unity Party which has soared in the polls amid growing dissatisfaction with Netanyahu’s Likud Party.
