Israeli defence minister Yoav Gallant said that Hamas’ Khan Younis Brigade has now been dismantled and the military campaign will continue to Rafah.

Hamas has given an “initial positive confirmation” to a proposal for a ceasefire of up to 40 days and the release of Israeli hostages, according to the Qatari Foreign Ministry. US, Egyptian and Qatari mediators proposed a six-week pause in the Gaza war and a hostage-prisoner exchange, which was approved by Israeli intelligence. There is no official consensus within Hamas, however, and Hamas’ leader Ismail Haniyeh is expected in Cairo for further talks.

Reports say that Saudi Arabia will accept a political commitment from Israel to create a Palestinian state in return for normalised relations with the Israel and a defence pact with the U.S.. The kingdom is keen to shore up its defences in the light of an increasingly belligerent Iran, and transform its economy with foreign investment. However, the deal, already seen as a long-shot even before the war, will depend on how the conflict develops.
