In power since 2000, Putin could run for a fifth term as president in the March 17, 2024, election, a move made possible by constitutional changes that allow him to remain in office until 2036.
“The decision has been made -- he will run,” one source told Reuters.
Four other sources also told Reuters that he will run.
Boris Yeltsin handed Putin the presidency on the last day of 1999. He has been leader for longer than any other Russian ruler since Josef Stalin, beating even Leonid Brezhnev’s 18-year tenure.
Between June 25 and July 1, 2020, a nationwide vote ratified constitutional reforms proposed by Putin. Two days later, Putin signed an executive order amending Russia’s constitution, allowing him to run for two additional six-year terms.
Putin, who turned 71 in October, could stay in power for life.
