The new numbers, announced by Ruven Menikdiwela, director of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) office in New York, come as the European Union searches for agreement on a system for the sharing out of asylum seekers who reach Europe outside of official border crossings.
The majority of migrants and refugees who made it to southern Europe arrived in Italy – over 130,000, an increase of 83% compared to the same period in 2022, she said. The others landed in Greece, Spain, Cyprus and Malta.
More than 2,500 migrants died or went missing while trying to cross the Mediterranean to Europe so far in 2023, a large increase over the 1,680 dead or missing in the same period in 2022.
