Select foreign aid and rescue teams have joined desperate efforts to find any remaining survivors high in Morocco’s Atlas mountains, as the death toll rose to 2,497 people three days after a powerful earthquake that has left many villages still inaccessible.
Search teams from Spain, Britain and Qatar were joining efforts to find survivors of the 6.8 magnitude quake that struck late on Friday night, 72km southwest of Marrakech.
Morocco has deployed the army and has said it is reinforcing search-and-rescue teams, providing drinking water and distributing food, tents and blankets.
French help is on standby but the head of one rescue charity, Secouristes sans Frontieres, said his aid workers had not been given the go-ahead from the Moroccan government, the AFP news agency reports.
The 6.8-magnitude quake, Morocco’s deadliest in more than six decades, had its epicentre below an isolated cluster of mountainous villages 45 miles south of Marrakech, shaking infrastructure as far away as the country’s northern coast.
