On Monday, U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan set a March 4, 2024, trial date for Donald Trump. Special counsel Jack Smith’s prosecution team alleges that Trump knowingly spread lies about voter fraud to subvert Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 presidential election.
“The public has a right to a prompt and efficient resolution of this matter,” Chutkan said.
The March 4 courtroom appearance will come the day before Super Tuesday -- a crucial voting day when 14 states will hold primaries and the largest number of delegates are up for grabs.
“I want to note here that setting a trial date does not depend and should not depend on the defendant’s personal or professional obligations,” Chutkan said.
The March date comes three weeks before a New York criminal trial in a case charging him with a hush-money payment to a porn actress.
On May 20, Trump faces prosecutor Smith and 40 criminal counts for mishandling classified documents in 2021 -- showing them to individuals who were not authorised to view them -- and violating the Espionage Act.
Trump also faces a criminal case with 13 counts in Georgia on charges of plotting to overturn the state’s 2020 election results. Trump surrendered last Thursday in the Georgia case for fingerprinting and posing with a scowl for a former U.S. president’s first mug shot in history.
