Early Monday morning, official results showed Erdoğan had received an absolute majority of 52.1% votes.
Rival Kemal Kiliçdaroğlu, who threatened to end Erdoğan’s 20-year political dominance, secured 47.9% of votes.
“The only winner today is Turkey, we should come together in unity and solidarity,” Erdogan told a chanting and flag-waving crowd. Erdoğan supporters chanted Allahu Akbar, or God is Great.
Erdoğan wrong-footed opponents who thought voters would punish him over the state’s slow response to devastating earthquakes in February, which killed more than 50,000 people.
