Caos en Twitter desde su adquisición por Musk

By Duncan Mil

November 24, 2022 - El Parlamento Europeo está por citar a Elon Musk para cuestionarlo sobre su adquisición de Twitter Inc. Los legisladores de la Unión Europea discutirán el plan en detalla en una reunión de jueves (24 de noviembre).

Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) want Musk to show up in Brussels in person to hear about his plans and remind him of legal compliance with European laws -- especially the newly-adopted Digital Services Act (DSA).

Liberal MEP Sophie in ’t Veld, a member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs panel, said she is concerned about giving “free rein” to hate speech, the incitement of hatred and violence, disinformation seeking to influence elections.

“We first want to know: Is he indeed going to play by the rules, to respect European laws? I think we also want to be reassured that Twitter is not going to be, let’s say, a threat to democracy,” the Dutch member of the European Parliament said in an interview on Bloomberg TV.

MEP Christel Schaldemose, chair of the group implementing the DSA, said Twitter could “very well be the case to test DSA for the first time.”

“If the EU is not making sure that DSA rules apply for Twitter, then it would be a failure,” she added.

The DSA allows the European Commission to ask a judge to block Twitter’s use in the European Union.

Twitter could also face fines of up to six per cent of its global turnover -- $304.8 million. Brussels can fine it periodically until violations of DSA regulations stop.
