Shot Sage Blue Marilyn, described by Alex Rotter, Chairman of 20th and 21st Century Art at Christie’s, as “the absolute pinnacle of American Pop”, is a 1964 likeness of Monroe’s face screen-printed with bright yellow hair, a pink face and light blue eyeshadow.
If the work does sell for the estimated price, it would shatter Warhol's current auction record, set in 2013 by Silver Car Crash (Double Disaster), which fetched $105.4m.
The most expensive 20th century painting sold at auction is Les femmes d’Alger (Version O) by Picasso, which fetched $179.4m in 2015 at Christie's New York.
