March 20, 1792: Revolutionary France adopted the guillotine as the official means of execution. It remained the legal method until France abolished the death penalty in 1981

March 21, 1617: Pocahontas, daughter of a Native American chief who saved the life of a colonist about to be executed by her tribe, died on a visit to England at age 22

March 22, 1895: Auguste and Louis Lumiere first demonstrated motion pictures using celluloid film. A film of workers leaving a factory in Paris was shown to invited guests

March 23, 2021: The container ship Ever Given ran aground in the Suez Canal, blocking one of the world’s busiest trade routes for six days until it was freed

March 24, 2002: For the first and, to date, only time in the history of the Oscars, two African-American actors, Halle Berry and Denzel Washington, scooped the top acting awards

March 25, 1942: Aretha Franklin, pictured above at the inauguration of President Barack Obama, was born. The singer, who died in 2018, would have been 80 today

March 26, 1953: Jonas Salk, from the University of Pittsburgh, reported successful tests of his polio vaccine. The vaccine virtually ended the crippling viral disease
