Crece el número de personas no religiosas en Estados Unidos

By Duncan Mil

December 15, 2021 - Según Pew Research Centre, el número de estadounidenses que se identifican como no religiosos está aumentando en el país profundamente cristiano, cerca de tres de cada 10 adultos no tiene afiliación religiosa.

Some 29 per cent of American adults are now religiously unaffiliated -- up from 16 per cent 14 years ago -- the study found, reinforcing the notion that Americans are becoming more secular in the 21st century.

The survey refers to people who self-describe as atheists, agnostics, or “nothing in particular” when asked about their religious identity as religious “nones.” And their numbers have been growing.

Seventy-eight per cent of U.S. adults identified themselves as Christian in 2007. Now, some 63 per cent do, according to the research. Then, the researchers said that Christians outnumbered nones by almost five to one, and today it is closer to two-to-one.

Pew’s latest survey found that the secular shift is mostly amongst Protestant communities, with the Catholic share of the population holding relatively steady in recent years. Forty per cent of Americans are Protestants today, a drop from when over half of the people identified in 2007.

Non-Christian faiths, including Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, and Hindus, make up about 6% of the American adult population in 2021.
