The ‘Halo’, introduced into F1 in 2018, is a cockpit protection device designed to improve driver safety in the event of an accident -- in particular to deflect debris away from head. It is estimated to add 14kg to the car’s weight.
Hamilton’s crash with rival Max Verstappen occurred on lap 26 of 53 at Monza as Verstappen approached the Variante del Rettifilo at 225mph and Hamilton exited the pit-lane.
The pair are locked in a tense battle for the drivers’ title this season, with Verstappen -- aiming for first F1 world title -- currently leading driver standings by five points with eight scheduled races remaining.
