By Duncan Mil

In the 20 years since the 9/11 attacks, “homegrown” jihadists inspired by Al Qaeda and the so-called Islamic State (IS) have killed 107 people inside the United States. American authorities have charged 480 people residing inside the U.S. with jihadist terrorism or related crimes since 2001.

According to New America, individuals inspired by far-right ideology, including white supremacists, anti-government, anti-abortion and anti-Semitic extremists, have also killed 114 people in the U.S.

Since early 2011, when U.S. Navy SEALs killed Al Qaeda mastermind Osama bin Laden in Pakistan, global terrorist-related deaths soared from 7,500 to a peak of over 33,500 in 2014, according to the Institute for Economics and Peace. Including the 9/11 death toll of 2,977, as many as 263,700 individuals worldwide have lost their lives in terrorist attacks between 2001 and 2020. By 2014, IS and Boko Haram became the world’s most deadly terrorist groups, followed by the Taliban and Al Qaeda.

Unable to successfully attack the U.S., Al Qaeda and IS moved their sights to Europe. Between 2015 and 2020, devastating attacks have taken place in Belgium, France, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom, Tunisia and Turkey, claiming more than 480 lives.
