April 12, 1961: Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space, making a single orbit of the Earth in the spacecraft Vostok I. The flight lasted 108 minutes

April 13, 1906: Samuel Beckett, Irish playwright and poet, was born in Dublin. He lived mostly in France, where he wrote his best-known work, Waiting for Godot

April 14, 1981: The space shuttle Columbia, seen here on the launchpad, made a perfect landing following its maiden flight. Columbia blew up on re-entry in February 2003

April 15, 2019: A major fire engulfed the Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris. The spire and roof collapsed but the bell towers and valuable treasures were saved

April 16, 1746: English troops defeated the Jacobite Scots, led by Charles Edward Stuart, or “Bonnie Prince Charlie”, at Culloden, the last pitched battle on British soil

April 17, 1961: Some 1,500 U.S.-backed Cuban exiles opposed to Fidel Castro launched an invasion at the Bay of Pigs but were soon overwhelmed by Castro’s troops
