Tropical Storm Theta formed southwest of the Azores on Monday to become the 29th named storm of the 2020 season, topping the previous record of 28 set in 2005.

An unmatched 12 named storms, including a record-tying six hurricanes, have made landfall in the United States this year. Five of the named storms have come ashore in Louisiana, a first for the state.

Eta is forecast to dissipate over the western Atlantic Ocean by the weekend, AP said.

Meanwhile, Theta is chugging east toward Europe on the cusp of hurricane status. The last time there were two named storms active at the same time this late in the year was in December 1887.

In addition to Eta and Theta, another system is forming in the Caribbean, with an 80 percent chance of becoming the 30th named storm. That would be Iota.

Never before have three named storms been twirling at the same time in the Atlantic in November.
