As infections slow in other countries, India reported its highest single-day spike on Thursday with 66,999 more cases and 942 deaths. Its total of 47,033 deaths trails only the United States (166,027), Brazil (104,201) and Mexico (54,666) and the pandemic shows no signs of slowing.

India’s outbreak has become one of the fastest-growing in the world, with the epicentre of the disease shifting from megacities like Mumbai and New Delhi to the country’s vast hinterland where nearly 70% of India’s 1.4 billion population live.

The states of Bihar, Assam, Jharkhand, Odisha and Uttar Pradesh received most of the migrant workers. They lost their jobs in the cities when Prime Minister Narendra Modi ordered one of the world’s most stringent lockdowns in March.

The western state of Maharashtra continues to be the worst-affected state with 529,663 cases. The region recorded 12,712 new cases in the past 24 hours and suffered 344 additional fatalities, taking the toll to 18,650.
