Se reaviva el debate sobre la bandera confederada

By Jordi Bou

June 15, 2020 - Las protestas Black Lives Matter han reavivado el debate sobre la bandera confederada, un emblema de racismo y esclavitud para sus opositores pero un símbolo de herencia e historia para sus partidarios.

The national protest movement that has erupted in the wake of George Floyd's death has rekindled a fire under the cultural tinderbox known as the American Confederacy.

In the past week, NASCAR banned the Confederate flag from its events and races, and the Marine Corps ordered the removal of public displays of the Confederate flag from its military installations. Statues of rebel heroes across the South have been vandalized or taken down, either by protesters or local authorities.

Nascar driver Bubba Wallace, the only full-time African-American in the top-flight U.S. motor-racing series, has got the organisation to ban the Confederate flag from events.

The Confederate flag has been a common sight at Nascar circuits, particularly in the sport's southern U.S. heartland.

Wallace, 26, became in 2013 the first black driver to win a Nascar event since Wendell Scott in 1963.
