La economía mundial enfrenta golpe de $5 billones

By Duncan Mil

April 9, 2020 - La economía global enfrenta pérdida de crecimiento de al menos $5,5 billones – equivalente al PIB anual de Japón – debido a la pandemia de
coronavirus, según el banco de inversión JPMorgan Chase & Co.

The world is expected to plunge into its deepest peacetime recession since the 1920–21 Depression as the virus forces businesses to close and people to stay at home. However, economists predict the recession will be short-lived.

JPMorgan’s economists put the lost world output at $5.5 trillion or 7.9 per cent of GDP by the end of 2021. This hit compares with the entire gross domestic product of Japan -- the world’s third-largest economy -- with its nominal GDP of $5.15 trillion.

The data suggest the U.S. will suffer an 11.3 per cent loss -- more substantial than the 1920-21 slump that cost the world economy an estimated 10 per cent. The Eurozone faces a 6.1 per cent slump, behind the United Kingdom with 7.0 per cent. In comparison, the Great Depression of the 1930s hit world economies by around 4.6 per cent.

The International Monetary Fund is due to announce its latest forecasts as part of its spring meeting -- to be held virtually -- from April 17-19.
