AGENDA MUNDIAL

Eventos mundiales programados para marzo 2020 - interactivo

By Jordi Bou

Events covered include:

In the United States, the quest for a Democratic presidential nominee to stand against President Trump in November’s general election goes national on Super Tuesday.

With both California and Texas -- the nation’s two most populous states -- holding primaries on March 3, around 40 per cent of Americans will be voting on Super Tuesday. In total, 1,357 of the 1,991 pledged delegates a candidate needs to win the nomination are up for grabs on the big day.

In Greece, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic torch will be lit by High Priestess Xanthi Georgiou in Ancient Olympia. Greek Olympic and world shooting champion Anna Korakaki will become the first woman in history to serve as the first torchbearer.

In France, municipal elections loom on March 15 with President Emmanuel Macron presiding over the most unstable political climate in decades. With around 35,000 municipalities contested, the forces of the Left are showing rare signs of unity.

With just days to go until Israel’s election on March 2, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced plans to construct thousands of new homes in East Jerusalem. The project -- backed by U.S. President Trump -- will build on territory that the international community recognises as the capital of a future Palestinian state.

Opinion polls show Netanyahu’s Likud party trailing the rival Blue and White party of Benny Gantz by one or two seats. This ballot is Israel’s third election in less than 12 months.

In Asia, Nepal’s Chitwan National Park will conduct a rhino census. The park is home to around 600 or so greater one-horned rhinos, the largest of the Asian rhino species.

The year’s first European Union summit takes place on March 26-27. EU leaders need to hammer out an agreement on the proposed €1 trillion-plus ($1.18 trillion) 2021-27 budget. Without Britain’s net contribution it will face an annual black hole of €12 billion ($15 billion).
