The speed, recorded on Wednesday, is an important milestone for the Bloodhound project, which is attempting to break the current land speed record of of 763mph (1,228km/h). That attempt won’t happen for at least a year in order to allow time for more testing.
Bloodhound is currently powered by a Eurofighter jet engine, which delivers about nine tonnes of thrust – enough to reach speeds of up to 650mph (1,050km/h). For the record attempt, the addition of a rocket motor will hopefully send the car through the sound barrier and ultimately past 1,000mph (1,600km/h).
