Oct 1, China: Celebrations for the 70th anniversary of the People’s Republic take place against a sobering backdrop of trade wars with the U.S and political crisis in Hong Kong

Oct 4, Netherlands: Rembrandt van Rijn, one of the world’s greatest painters, died 350 years ago today. All the Rembrandts, the exhibition at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, shows all 22 of the museum’s oil paintings for the first time, as well as 60 drawings and 300 of its finest prints

Oct 7, Norway & Sweden: The 2019 Nobel Prize winners are named, with two awards for Literature. Last year’s prize was withdrawn amid a misconduct scandal

Oct 21, Canada: Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau fights for political survival as Canadians go to the polls. He stands accused of
breaking conflict-of-interest laws, while his “blackface” photographs have caused national uproar

Oct 22, Japan: Emperor Naruhito, who succeeded to the Chrysanthemum Throne in May, is formally enthroned in a ceremony attended by dignitaries from nearly 200 countries

Oct 27, Argentina: Presidential and legislative elections appear likely to shift Argentina to the left. Voters are angry about the country’s deep recession and the austerity policies of the centre-right incumbent president, Mauricio Macri (above)

Oct 31, UK: Prime minister Boris Johnson has vowed to take Britain out of the EU by this date, with or without a deal. But Parliament has blocked attempts to force through “no deal” and the deadline could be extended again
