India has 106 million adult smokers, second only to China in the world, making it a lucrative market for companies making vaping products, according to Reuters.

The ban comes at a time when vaping is facing increased scrutiny in other countries.

The United States last week announced plans to remove flavoured e-cigarettes from stores, warning that sweet flavours had drawn millions of children into nicotine addiction.

Two states – New York and Michigan – have bans in place on flavoured e-cigarettes, as federal health officials investigate a handful of deaths and potentially hundreds of lung illnesses tied to vaping.

In China, online marketplaces Alibaba and JD.com have pulled vaping products made by U.S.-based Juul Labs from their offerings, just a week after they debuted.
