Maratón de Berlín 2019

By Chris Dinsdale

In 2018, both course records were broken by Kenyans, with Gladys Cherono winning the women’s race in 2:18:11, and Eliud Kipchoge setting a new world record time of 2:01:39 in the men’s marathon.

This year, a competitive men’s field has formed, including Ethiopian world class runners Kenenisa Bekele (champion, 2016), Guye Adola (second-place, 2017) and Leul Gebrselassie all aiming to challenge the world record time -- eight of the last ten men’s marathon world records have been set in Berlin since 1998.

In the women’s race, reigning champion Gladys Cherono will face her fellow Kenyan Vivian Cheruiyot, with both lining up against tough opposition for the title from Ethiopian Mare Dibaba, who secured marathon bronze at the 2016 Olympics.
