September 15, 1949: Konrad Adenauer was elected as the first Chancellor of West Germany. From the ruins of WWII he led his country to democracy and economic prosperity

September 16,2018: Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge set a new marathon world record in Berlin of 2:01:39, shattering the previous mark by almost 1 minute and 20 seconds

September 17,1976: NASA unveiled the first Space Shuttle, named Enterprise after the fictional starship from Star Trek. The launch was witnessed by the cast from the hit TV show

September 18,2014: Scotland voted in a referendum on independence, with 55 percent of the country’s 4.2 million voters opting to remain part of the United Kingdom

September 19,1949: Twiggy, the original waif model of the 1960s, was born in London, England. Her petite, androgynous look took the international modelling world by storm

September 20,1519: Ferdinand Magellan sailed from Spain to find a western passage to the Indies. He did not survive but his ship Vittoria completed the first circumnavigation of the globe

September 21,1942: The Boeing B-29 bomber made its maiden flight. The plane, known as the Superfortress, carried out the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945
