The yellow jersey was awarded for the first time during the 1919 Tour de France, and quickly became highly sought after by riders and a main feature of the race.
A century later, the yellow jersey has been worn by a total of 266 riders from 24 different countries.
Belgian cycling legend Eddy Merckx still holds the record for the most days spent in the yellow jersey, at 97.
To celebrate the centenary, Tour de France organisers Amaury Sports Organisation and jersey sponsor Le Coq Sportif have announced 20 individual yellow jerseys – featuring race routes and past champions – to be worn during the 2019 edition of the race.
