By Jordi Bou

Events covered include:

Jul 4, U.S.: President Trump plans to have military jets, including one of the aircraft used as Air Force One, fly over the Mall during Fourth of July celebrations in Washington DC. He will also give an address from the Lincoln Memorial, sparking alarm that he will turn the
holiday into a partisan event

Jul 7-8, Niger: The African Union summit in Niamey will push forward on the AGENDA 2063 plan for development on the continent, and set the Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) in motion

Jul 8, Iran: President Hassan Rouhani is warning that Iran will increase uranium enrichment levels, bringing it closer to weapons grade, if Europe does not do more to shield it from U.S. sanctions by this date

Jul 15, India: The Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft blasts off as India attempts to become the fourth country to land a probe on the moon. The briefcase-size rover, which aims to probe the
elemental composition of the lunar surface, will try a soft landing 600km from the south pole

Jul 19, U.S.: The reworking of the 1994 film The Lion King opens with a new cast and the full
benefit of CGI to capture the photorealistic effects achieved with The Jungle Book, a box office hit in 2016

Jul 20, Space: NASA’s Apollo 11 mission landed the first humans on the moon 50 years ago. Neil Armstrong described his first footfall on the lunar surface as “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”

Jul 22, UK: The Conservative Party will declare the winner of its contest to choose a new leader, who will become prime minister. Either Boris Johnson or Jeremy Hunt will be obliged to resolve the Brexit impasse that destroyed Theresa May’s premiership

July, Turkey: President Erdogan hopes to take delivery of Russia’s S-400 air defence system but the U.S. is threatening to kick Turkey out of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter project if it proceeds with the purchase. Ankara warns it will “take reciprocal steps” if the U.S. imposes
sanctions
