The self-styled Libyan National Army (LNA), led by Khalifa Hifter who last week launched the push on Tripoli, has clashed with rival militias which support the U.N.-backed government that controls Tripoli and the western part of the country.

Fighting was underway Monday at Tripoli's former international airport, some 24km south of the city. That airport was closed in 2014 after fighting destroyed much of it.

The LNA also acknowledged launching an airstrike at the Mitiga airport Monday, just 8km east of the city centre.
