In a pre-dawn operation on December 4 the army discovered a 200-metre tunnel that stretched from the Lebanese village of Kafr Kela across the border and exited in farmland southwest of the Israeli border town of Metula. The shaft, cut through solid rock some 24 metres below ground level, was outfitted with electricity, ventilation pipes and communications, and extended 40 metres into Israel.
Metula residents told Israeli media they had been hearing digging noises and voices from beneath their homes for years and had reported their suspicions to the military.
The construction of the tunnels is a violation of UN Security Council resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 Second Lebanon War.
