Qatar is the world’s largest LNG exporter, according to the International Gas Union, exporting 81 million tonnes last year, or nearly 28 per cent of global supply. In April 2017, Doha announced that it would boost its export capacity from 77 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) to 100 mtpa.

In fiscal year (June-July) 2017–2018, Australia exported 62 mtpa as the last of its liquefaction projects were ramping up. Four additional liquefaction trains -- to purify and condense gas -- will boost capacity in 2020 by 16.95 mtpa.

Russia is building four trains at its Yamal and Vysotsk facilities, increasing capacity by some 48 mtpa.

In October, a Royal Dutch Shell-led C$40 billion (US$32 bn) LNG Canada project reached a final investment decision (FID). It’s the first significant LNG project to receive an FID since the plunge in global oil and gas prices from 2014 to 2017. All its stakeholders approved the plan -- Shell, Malaysian state-owned oil major Petronas, PetroChina, Korea Gas Corp (KOGAS) and Japan’s Mitsubishi Corp.

LNG Canada will have an initial output of some 14 mtpa from two production trains, with an option to add two more for a total of 28 mtpa. The project will be so large that at full capacity it will boost global LNG supply by seven per cent.

By 2020, the U.S. will launch 12 liquefied natural gas export projects that will have a collective liquefaction capacity of 48.5 mtpa. The expansion will boost production to roughly 63 mtpa — a big step up from the mere 1.5 mtpa that existed before 2016.
