A study is taking place to see if a relatively simple method can restore damaged coral on the Great Barrier Reef using electricity.

The reef has severely deteriorated in recent years following cyclones and back-to-back heatwaves, but now conservation group Reef Ecologic is attempting to regrow surviving coral fragments on steel frames.

The frames are placed on damaged parts of the reef and stimulated with low-voltage electricity to accelerate the coral’s growth. Early indicators show coral regrows 3-4 times faster than under normal conditions – essential if it is to survive the now frequent bleaching events.
