Bound by the terms of the 2015 Minsk ceasefire agreements, both sides are barred from using air strikes, tanks and heavy weaponry. This has created the conditions for an attritional land war which marks a throwback to another age, where soldiers fight in trenches with shells, grenades and sniper fire, according to a report by the Financial Times.
The UN Human Rights agency says 25,000 people have been injured in the conflict, including up to 9,000 civilians, and an estimated 1.6 million are internally displaced.
