Brazil started their campaign with a tentative draw against Switzerland, followed by a stoppage time victory over Costa Rica, and a more assured performance to dispatch Serbia. The five-time champions, the only team from South America to have won the World Cup in Europe (1958), beat Mexico in the Last 16 with clinical ease to reach their seventh successive quarter-final.

Belgium began the group stage with impressive victories over Panama and Tunisia, before narrowly defeating a much-changed England side to top Group H. The Red Devils kept their World Cup hopes alive in the Last 16 with a remarkable comeback against Japan, recovering from a two-goal deficit before Nacer Chadli scored a last-gasp winner.

The teams have met four times before, with Brazil victorious on three of those occasions, most recently in 2002, and Belgium winning the remaining match.
