The 70th Road Racing Championship is organized by the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (F.I.M), which is based in Switzerland and has 112 affiliated National Motorcycle Federations (FMN) over six continents.

Grand Prix motorcycles are purpose-built prototypes that are not available for purchase and can not be driven legally on public roads. They are estimated to be worth about 2 million US dollars each as they can not easily be replaced.

The 2018 Championship will include motorcycles from 6 constructors (Aprilla, Ducati, Honda, KTM, Suzuki and Yamaka) in 12 Teams (Ducati with 4, Honda with 3, Yamaya with 2 and the others with 1 each).

The highest recorded speed for a MotoGP motorcycle is 361 km/h (224 mph), set by Andrea Dovizioso, during the warmup at the 2016 Qatar Grand Prix
