Mark Carney’s Liberals win Canada election
April 29, 2025 - Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberals have retained power in Canada’s election but fell short of the majority he had hoped for to strengthen his hand in tariff negotiations with U.S. President Donald Trump.

The result is a stunning turnaround for the Liberal Party, which was trailing in the polls just three months ago before Carney replaced Justin Trudeau as leader and U.S. President Trump started threatening tariffs.
The Liberals were leading or elected in 168 electoral districts, known as seats, followed by the Conservatives with 144, with votes still being counted.
The Liberals had needed to win 172 of the House of Commons’ 343 seats for a majority that would allow them to govern without support from a smaller party.
The Bloc Québécois, which runs candidates only in French-speaking Quebec, might hold the balance of power.
