VE DAY 80

Victory in Europe Day marks fall of Nazi Germany

By Jordi Bou

May 8, 2025 - The 80th anniversary of VE Day, which marks the end of World War II in Europe following the defeat of Nazi Germany, is being commemorated by countries around the world.

VE Day marks the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany to the Allied forces on May 8, 1945, bringing an end to the war in Europe. With few veterans of the conflict still around to attend reunions typically held on key anniversaries, the 80th VE Day may have been the final major opportunity to honour them.

The ambassadors of Russia and Belarus will not be invited to the German parliament’s commemorations of the 80th anniversary, over concerns they could “exploit” the event for anti-Ukraine propaganda.

Russian president Vladimir Putin, has frequently drawn on the legacy of the second world war to justify his invasion of Ukraine.
